The Pirates of Penzance, (Gilbert and Sullivan)
Off the coast of Cornwall, young pirate Frederic is celebrating his twenty-first birthday, and the end of his accidental apprenticeship to the Pirate King. Frederic has served the pirate crew since his youth, bound by his undying sense of duty despite his abhorrence for the pirate trade. As the play begins Frederic is preparing to leave the band, dedicating himself to their extermination.
Free from his indentures, Frederic heads for shore, taking with him his old nurse, Ruth. On shore, they happen across a group of young maidens. Frederic, who has never seen any woman in his life except Ruth, is enamored. He falls instantly in love with Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, only to discover that his birthday falls on February 29th, meaning he is technically still a pirate. With a flurry of pirates, poliecemen, maidens, and above all a sense of duty, we follow Frederic through his challenges as he strives to be with Mabel, his true love.
